Slit Scan

Michelle from Chaise Magazine writes:

...you might be interested in Golan Levin's slitscan video project repository. some very very cool experiments with "video cubism'" type work - http://www.flong.com/writings/lists/list_slit_scan.html (he also has lists of eyetracking and image averaging artwork at http://www.flong.com/writings/lists/)

"Slit-Scan imaging techniques are used to create static images of time-based phenomena. In traditional film photograhy, slit-scan images are created by exposing film as it slides past a slit-shaped aperture. In the digital realm, thin slices are extracted from a sequence of video frames, and concatenated into a new image."

Weren't the end effects of 2001 (all the trippy stuff) created with some kind of slit-scan type system?

Way to post a question then look it up myself and post the answer.

At any rate, yes, it seems that 2001 was an early implementation of the SlitScan technique.

Here's an article that discusses how it was done:

And here's an (untested) AE plug that claims to emulate the look:

I'm at work, but if somebody can get something more interesting than the itunes visualisation neddies out of this thing, I'd love to see it.

This is a bloated encoding, I didn't know the H.264 sweet spots yet so I made it too big. I'll do a smaller one tomorrow.

Oh, you need Quicktime 7 to view it.

There's actually a slit scan effect built into motion 2. I played with it the other day and it looks pretty good if you play with it a bit.
